The guitar will be neck-through construction. We're currently shopping for a nice tasty piece of flamed maple for the top. Latest news: we bought the Maple and East Indian Rosewood for the center core of the guitar. Watch this space for new photos as we start cutting wood on this project.
Over the last couple of days we clamped and glued three of the central body laminates together.
(11/10/08) Now that we have cut, tapered and veneered each of the laminated for the body/neck core, we can get started on gluing these pieces together. In the photo to the left you can see that we are gluing the third laminate on a total of five. These are assembled one at a time to ensure that the combined laminates stay straight. We'll glue the remainimg parts together within the next couple of days and things will start to take shape! |
The laminates which combine to create the core of the guitar have now been milled to the correct tapers in the ornamental Mill.
(10/15/08) Today took the center laminates of the guitar and set them up on the ornamental mill, where we machine each of them to a specific taper along its length. When combined, these tapers collectively create a taper equivalent to that of the neck itself. This creates a very effective flow along the length of the finished instrument. Next we have to select veneers which we will use as accents between each of the core laminates. |
The first few pieces of wood have been cut for this guitar. We'll be milling these to tapered laminates pretty soon.
(9/30/08) At last - a guitar is born. We used our newly created template to allow us to cut three pieces of Flamed Maple and two pieces of East Indian Rosewood wich we will use to create the center core of this neck-through guitar. Each of these pieces is carefully sanded flat in preparation for the machining we will do next on the ornamental mill, where we cut each laminate to the correct taper. Then we'll start gluing pieces together. |
I cut a cross-sctional template of the guitar from Acrylic sheet so that I can start cutting wood for the nack/body laminates.
(9/24/08) One of the things I had to do to get this project started was to creat a relatively accurate template for the cross-section of the guitar. Since it's going to be a neck-through instrument I needed a good reliable template that would let me cut wood for my laminates to the correct size. I cut the template out of 3/8 thick acrylic sheet. Now I can proceed to my Maple and East Indian Rosewood and get some parts to the core cut out. |

The above photo is an example of the type of finish we are planning for this guitar. The tint may possibly be slightly more red, we'll let the customer make that call.
(9/2/08) The image to the left show the type of flamed maple and the projected tint for this guitar. Maybe a tad more on the red side, but this is a nice example of what we are shooting for. I plan to pick up all the material for this project at the end of this week. Hardware has been ordered and if all goes to plan we should be sawing and gluing sometime next week. We are looking forward to getting this one started, it should be a beauty! |

We know we are going to end up with a very impressive guitar with this build. We are in the process of discussing its features with our customer.
(8/20/08) We haven't officially started this guitar yet but I wanted to get something on the site for the customer's benefit. The guitar will be based on a classic PRS body style but with numerous differences. It will be a neck-through instrument and it will have Watson dual coil pickups and Watson electronics. We know the top will be maple but most of the other aspects of this instrument have still to be established. This instrument will be similar to our Serial #06G006. |
